Eligibility Criteria | Scholarships for University of Hamburg Germany
You are eligible for financing if you are
- be enrolled in your subject at the University of Hamburg for at least two semesters and pursuing a degree (students in two-year master’s degree programs and doctoral researchers can apply after one full semester);
- do not hold German citizenship;
- Are not eligible for the Federal Student Loan Program.
Scholarship benefits
- The maximum monthly financing amount is 850 euros. Depending on the availability of funding, individual doctoral researchers may be awarded a merit grant totaling €1,000 per month (approximately 2-3 scholarships are awarded per round).
- Merit scholarships are awarded for two semesters (12 months in total). You can re-apply for a scholarship. In justified exceptional cases, the maximum financing period is 3 years.

- How to applyThe first step to applying for a Hamburg Merits Scholarship is to enroll in an undergraduate degree programme. Then apply for scholarships based on the deadlines by following the link for your chosen application period (you will be required to log in with your STiNE ID):
You will then be invited to register and complete your application.
- application documentsYou must upload the following documents to the online application portal:
- the biography
- Motivation letter: Please use this Form (PDF)
- Evidence of social and/or multicultural activities (if applicable)
- Record of Achievement: A hard copy of your STiNE or course certificate list. Master’s students and doctoral researchers submit their final diploma.
- Reviews of 2 professors or junior professors at the University of Hamburg. In justified cases, other faculty members of the University of Hamburg can also prepare the assessments.
