The Skilled Worker visa offers qualified individuals the opportunity to work in the United Kingdom under the sponsorship of an approved employer in an eligible role. To be eligible for this visa, applicants must accumulate at least 70 points based on specific criteria, which include skill and salary level, English language proficiency, and a valid job offer from a UK employer with a sponsorship license.


This visa program also extends provisions for partners and children to apply as Skilled Worker dependents, allowing them to join the primary visa holder in the UK. The Skilled Worker visa for the UK is initially granted for up to five years, after which, the holder may become eligible to apply for permanent residency in the UK.

Eligibility Criteria: To qualify for the United Kingdom Skilled Worker Visa in 2023, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Have a confirmed job offer before applying for the visa.
  2. Work for a UK employer approved by the Home Office.
  3. Possess a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ from the employer, detailing the offered role in the UK.
  4. Engage in a job listed among eligible occupations.
  5. Receive a minimum salary, the amount of whch depends on the nature of the work.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English. Proof of English knowledge is typically required during the application process.
  7. Note that specific eligibility criteria may vary depending on the job.

Benefits of the UK Skilled Worker Visa: The UK Skilled Worker Visa 2023 offers numerous advantages, including:

Applications can be submitted up to three months before the intended employment start date in the UK, as specified on the Certificate of Sponsorship.

Applicants should submit their online application within three months of receiving their Certificate of Sponsorship, which contains a unique reference number required for the application.

Applicants will also need to attend an appointment at a visa application center to provide biometric information and submit supporting documents.

The application process varies depending on whether the applicant is:

  1. Outside the UK and planning to come to the UK.
  2. Already in the UK and extending an existing visa.
  3. Already in the UK and switching from a different visa.
  4. If changing jobs or employers, applicants must apply to update their visa.

Applicants’ partners and children may apply to join or remain in the UK as ‘dependants’ if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Supporting Documents: Applicants should have the following documents ready:


  1. Certificate of Sponsorship reference number provided by the sponsor.
  2. Sponsor’s name and sponsorship license number.
  3. Confirmation of job title.
  4. Confirmation of the annual salary for the job.
  5. Job occupation code.
  6. A valid passport or travel document to prove travel eligibility.
  7. Expired passports or travel documents to demonstrate travel history.

Additionally, applicants may be required to submit additional documents based on specific circumstances. These may include:

  1. Proof of personal savings, if applicable.
  2. Proof of English language proficiency, if applicable.
  3. Tuberculosis test results for individuals from designated countries.
  4. Evidence of the relationship with dependants also applying.
  5. Valid ATAS certificate, if applicable.
  6. UK PhD certificate or Ecctis reference number, if applicable.
  7. A criminal record certificate from any country where the applicant has resided for 12 months or more in the past 10 years, especially if they will work in the education, health, or social care sector in the UK.
