Universities of Edinburgh MRC Doctoral Training Program (DTP) | details
This doctoral training program focuses on training doctoral students in both the quantitative skills (mathematics, statistics, numeracy, and numerical excellence) identified by the MRC (Medical Research Council) skills priorities, and in their application to a variety of data sources (from bench “omics” to records Health), which means that students gain interdisciplinary training in the skills required to deliver the vision of precision medicine.
Precision medicine is a transformative approach to disease treatment and prevention, with a focus on determining which strategy will be effective for patients, based on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.
DTP progress:
- PhD with Integrated Study – Training in Precision Medicine in order to become a T-shaped researcher (broad in outlook during in-depth study)
- Advanced learning in both medicine and arithmetic
- Big data assets originating from the infrastructure and facilities within the world leading training environments delivered by the three partners, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Karolinska.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the MRC Universities of Edinburgh Doctoral Training Programme, applicants are expected to meet the following conditions:
- Applicants must be international students
- A UK honors degree of 2:1, or its international equivalent.
English tests
We accept the following English language qualifications at the specified grades:
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component.
- TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): 92 overall with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL My Best Score to meet the English language requirements.
- C1 Advanced (CAE) / C2 (CPE): Total 176 with at least 169 in each component.
- Trinity ISE: ISE II with variances in the four components.
- PTE Academic: 62 overall with at least 59 in each component.
Scholarship benefits
Successful applicants who meet all necessary eligibility requirements will receive a fully funded scholarship including:
- Pay annual tuition fees.
- A stipend for each of the four years of the PhD (based on the minimum UKRI PhD rate).
- Research Training Support Grant of $5,000 annually.
- An annual travel grant of £300.

- Applications for all projects must be submitted via the University of Edinburgh Degree finder.
- For those applying to the University of Glasgow project, after the application deadline your application along with any supporting documents will be shared with the University of Glasgow.
- A CV is required and you must upload it to the document upload section of your application.
- Applicants must apply to a specific project. Please ensure that details of the project you are applying for are included within the program section of your application.
- The project title should be included in both the research topic and research project areas
- All moderators as listed in the advertisement must be included in the suggested moderator field
- You can apply for a maximum of 3 projects. Please submit a separate application for each project. The application form will ask you to rank projects, however, we require a separate application for each project you wish to apply for.
