Who can apply?
Excellently qualified doctoral candidates, young academics and scientists who have completed a master’s degree or diploma, or in exceptional cases have a bachelor’s degree at the latest by the time they begin grant-supported research, or those who have already completed a doctoral degree (postdoctoral researchers).
PhD candidates who are fully attending their PhD at a German university are not eligible to apply.
What can be funded?
Research project or continuing science education course at a state or state recognized higher education institution or at a non-university research institute in Germany, carried out in coordination with an academic advisor in Germany.

Language Skills
- The required language level depends on the applicant’s study plans and subject: in arts, social sciences and law, at least a good knowledge of German is usually expected. For natural sciences and engineering, proof of good English language skills may also be accepted if English is spoken at the host institute. - Certificates, proof of credits, certificates and translations in uncredited form can be scanned and uploaded to the DAAD portal. DAAD reserves the right to request certified copies of documents.
