Eligibility criteria

In order to be eligible for the scholarships at IHE Delft, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • He must have been accepted to study at the institution.
  • Must have obtained a relevant bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrate excellent academic and leadership potential.

Scholarships at IHE Delft for International Students | details

There are a number of lucrative scholarships by reputed organizations available to international students. They include:

1. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Scholarship (BMGF)

There will be scholarships available from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which cover approximately 50% (€17,500) of the total cost of the programme. The scholarship is for candidates from low- or middle-income countries and must be accepted into the Water and Health track programme.


2. Erasmus Mundus

A number of EU Erasmus Mundus Scholarships are available on a competitive basis for the COASTHazar, IMETE, Floodrisk and GroundwatCh joint European master’s programs commencing in 2022.

3. FirstRand Foundation grants

FirstRand Foundation Scholarships are available to South Africans for postgraduate study outside South Africa in any discipline at an international university of their choice. Successful candidates will have excelled academically in their chosen field and will be able to demonstrate leadership and other qualities.

4. Joint World Bank Japan Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP)

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program is open to women and men from developing countries with relevant professional experience and a history of supporting development efforts in their countries. The IHE Delft MSc Program in Water and Sustainable Development is on the list of preferred JJ/WBGSP programmes.

5. Mahmoud Rabbani Scholarship

The scholarship is intended for Arab students who have been officially accepted into a master’s or doctoral program in the Netherlands. Candidates must be nationals of eligible countries and the maximum MSR scholarship is €15,000.

6. MENA Scholarship Program (or MSP) for Short Courses

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Scholarship Program offers scholarships for short courses to professionals from various countries. Scholarships can be used for short courses at IHE Delft or any other institution in the Netherlands. The program is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

7. MENA CD

IHE Delft will provide water professionals from seven countries in the Middle East and North Africa with a master’s level education in Delft on topics relevant to water scarcity in the MENA region. Fellowships will be awarded for the current academic year. The scholarship includes full tuition fees, health insurance, visa/residence permit cost for the Netherlands, and a monthly allowance of 970€ per month from the beginning will be the end date of the program (not to exceed 12 months).

OFID sponsors outstanding young students from developing countries through postgraduate studies in a development-related discipline. OFID awards scholarships to qualified applicants who have obtained or are about to complete a bachelor’s degree and who wish to study for a master’s degree. Applicants must be from a developing country (excluding OFID member countries) and he/she must first gain admission to pursue master’s degree studies in a relevant development field.

9. Orange Knowledge Program (OKP)

The Orange Dutch Knowledge Program (OKP) aims to contribute to sustainable and inclusive development by providing access to education and training for professionals and organizations. OKP scholarships will be available for IHE Delft’s new Master of Science program in Water and Sustainable Development and the Joint Master’s Program in Lagoonology and Wetland Management.

10. Citadel Scholarship Foundation

The Citadel Scholarship Foundation was established in 2007, out of a strong will to contribute to national development by creating highly qualified professionals to help promote the growth of Egypt in all sectors. The Foundation is funded by an endowment from Citadel Capital to award academic scholarships to talented and promising young Egyptians to pursue master’s degrees abroad, such as the MSc in Water and Sustainable Development.

11. Rotary Scholarship for Water and Sanitation Professionals

The strategic partnership between the Rotary Foundation (TRF) and the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education aims to address the world’s water and sanitation crisis by increasing the number of professionals trained to devise, plan and implement solutions in developing and emerging countries. Through this partnership, scholarships are awarded annually to IHE Delft MSc students. The scholarships are designed to foster productive, long-term relationships between Rotarians and the highly skilled water and sanitation professionals in their communities.


Rotary scholarships will be available for IHE Delft’s new Master of Science program in Water and Sustainable Development.

12. Grant coast

IHE Delft will provide water specialists from three countries of the Sahel (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger) with a master’s level education in Delft on topics relevant to the Sahel (water for food, water, health, peace and water security). Two fellowships will be awarded for the 2022-2023 academic year.

13. Schlumberger Foundation/College for the Future Scholarship

The Schlumberger Foundation College for the Future Program awards fellowships and supports female academics in science and engineering from developing and emerging countries for their advanced postgraduate studies at top universities abroad.

14. SIDS Fellowships

For the 2023 academic year, the Department of State will provide 5 additional fellowships for the Master’s Program in Water and Sustainable Development. To increase relevance to the specific challenges of SIDS, and to stimulate collaboration between professionals from the various disciplines offered by IHE, students will participate in a number of additional activities dedicated to SIDS.

15. WFF EFN Russell E. Train Fellowships

The Russell E. Train Fellowships support individuals who are pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in conservation. Each year, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) supports committed conservationists from target countries to receive financial support for their field studies and research. Applicants must return to their home countries to work in conservation for at least two years after completing their studies. This scholarship opportunity may be of particular interest to prospective students who have been accepted into the Water Resources and Ecosystem Health track of the new MSc program in Water and Sustainable Development.

16. Fellowships of the World Meteorological Organization

WMO and IHE Delft jointly support one or two scholarships per year from developing and least developed countries to undertake the Master’s Program in Water and Sustainable Development.
